30 Beauty Myths Debunked!

I was browsing the interwebs the other day when I stumbled accross this awesome artivcle- "30 Beauty Myths Debunked" via Your Beauty Spot. Here they are!

1. Always Wear Perfume Behind Your Ears
"The sebum-producing glands behind your ears will alter the true scent of your perfume,' says fragrance connoisseur, Roja Dove. "Wear it on the wrists, elbows and collarbone only."

2. Apply Foundation All Over for a Flawless Complexion
"This gives the skin a heavy, un-natural look,'" says make-up artist and cosmetics expert, Ariane Poole. "With the right colour and texture you need only apply it to the areas that really need it."
Haute Note- Yeah... I'm fairly certain whoever writes these "no foundation" tips have a flawless complexion to start with....

3. Chocolate Gives You Pimples
"This is the oldest myth in the book," says Indy Rihal from the British Skin Foundation. "However, if you already suffer from acne, your diet in general can affect the severity of your condition."

4. For Better Results, Leave Hair Removal Cream on for Longer
"Never ignore the instructions on home hair-removal kits,' says Michaeljohn beauty therapist, Heidi Walker. "Once the cream burns-out the hair, the next thing it will burn is your skin."

5. Organic Products are better for the Skin
"There isn't sufficient evidence to prove this," says Indy Rihal. "Some products that contain 'natural' or 'botanical' ingredients can even be allergens which irritate the skin."

6. You Can Repair Split Ends
"The only way to mend split ends is to cut them off," says trichologist Philip Kingsley. "So-called 'split-end healers' may temporarily glue the ends together but only until the hair is washed or combed."

7. Concealer Needs to be Two Shades Lighter Than Your Skin Tone
"This just draws more attention to your dark circles and bags," says Ariane Poole. "Instead, use a yellow-toned concealer, close to your skin shade which will neutralise darkness while looking natural."
8. White Marks on your Nail Signify Calcium Deficiency
"Knocking the nail plate traps air beneath the nail bed and is the real cause of white spots," says celebrity manicurist Leighton Denny. "To hide this wear a nude colour nail polish until the marks grow out."

9. You Can Prevent Stretch Marks
"Stretch marks appear as a result of gaining or losing weight. Unless that stays the same throughout your life then the marks can't be prevented," explains Indy Rihal.

10. Apply Body Lotion First, Then Perfume
"The alcohol in perfume breaks down the moisturising agents in lotion," warns Roja Dove. "This means you should always apply your fragrance first, let it dry and then lock it in with the matching lotion."

11. Tinted Moisturiser is just for Summer Months
"If you love your tinted moisturiser you needn't stop using it in the autumn," says Ariane Poole. "Because winter skin needs even more moisture, a tinted moisturiser with an SPF is perfect for hydration and anti-ageing sun protection in-one."

12. Use Tweezers to Remove Lip and Chin Hair
"Plucking hair in this area strengthens the follicle so the hair will grow back thicker," warns Heidi Walker. "Cut or wax it, or try IPL laser removal."

13. Soap is Good for the Skin
"Harsh soaps should be avoided, particularly on people with dry skin," says Indy Rihal. "They're often more alkaline which can destroy the natural balance of the skin and cause irritation."
Haute Note- I'm pretty sure everyone knows this now. Let's remove the "myth" title.

14. Frequent Shampooing Makes Hair Oiler
"Shampooing hair does not stimulate the oil glands," says Philip Kingsley. "It's simply a matter of perception because clean hair shows grease faster than hair that is already oily."

15. Shimmer Shadows can't be Worn Over a Certain Age
"Frosted shadows don't look good on most women, but shimmers do," says Ariane Poole. "They have sheer colour with a hint of sheen which gives eyes a more youthful appearance, whatever your age."

16. Nail Extensions Damage Nails
"Nail extensions do not damage nails but inexperienced nail technicians do," says Leighton Denny. "You don't blame the scissors if you get a bad haircut, do you?"

17. You Don't Have to Throw Away Make-Up
"Make-up, like all products, has a shelf life. Ensure that you buy new cosmetics every six months," advises Indy Rihal.

18. Cutting Your Hair Makes It Stronger or Grow Faster
"Your hair is not like a lawn where cutting can stimulate growth," says Philip Kingsley. "As the ends have less volume than the roots, when it is cut short the hair appears to be thicker, that's all."

19. To Keep Your Skin Looking Matte, You Must Use Powder
"Powder can look both dry and ageing on the skin," warns Ariane Poole. "Instead, use a mattifying primer after your moisturiser and shine-absorbing sheets on your t-zone during the day."

20. Nails Need A Rest From Polish So They Can Breathe
"Nails do not get tired and don't need to breath so there is no need to rest your nails from this season's key colours," says Leighton Denny.

21. Expensive Moisturisers are more Effective
Expensive moisturisers do not mean that they are more effective. Basic moisturisers do the job just as well," says Indy Rihal.

22. Bronzer All Over Makes You Look Healthy
"No it just makes you look brown and slightly dull," warns Ariane Poole. "For that sun-kissed glow, only brush bronzer to parts of the body where the sun would naturally hit. For the face that means above the brows, along the nose and across the cheeks."

23. Brushing Your Hair 100 Strokes a day is Good For It
"Brushing pulls your hair out, breaks it off and scratches the scalp which is damaging," says Philip Kingsley. "A brush should be used as a styling aid only, not as exercise for the hair."

24. You Should Exfoliate
"If you have dry skin, exfoliation could make the condition worse," explains Indy Rihal. "For normal skin, gentle exfoliation can help the skin look more radiant as it removes damaged skin cells. However, it can also remove some protective cells, which can cause irritation."

25. Eau de Toilette is Better Value For Money
"Not so. 80 percent of fragrance from eau de toilette will disappear within four hours of being applied. Parfum on the other hand holds its scent for 24 hours so you use less of it in the long run," says Roja Dove.

26. Foundation Should Be Matched To Your Jaw Line
"Match your foundation to the colour of your chest, rather than your jaw line, so your face isn't a different shade to your body," recommends Ariane Poole.

27. It's Too Late To Start Using Sunscreen
"Damaging effects from the sun begin from childhood but the effects only show in the long-term," says Indy Rihal. "Although, it is never too late to start using sunscreen, you should protect skin from as early in life as possible."

28. One Thick Layer of Fake Tan is as Good as Two
"Don't be heavy handed with fake tans," advises Heidi Walker. "Ideally, you should build it slowly for an even, streak-free finish. Apply a layer, then wait for an hour to decide if you need to top-up."

29. Never Pluck Eyebrows From the Top
"If your brows are going into your hairline or forming a sharp arch then you should remove those strays — even if they are on the top," says Ariane Poole.

30. You Only Need to Apply Sunscreen Once
"You should apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you go out into the sun and continue to re-apply every 2 hours for adequate protection," advises Indy Rihal

  1. Buy cosmetics every 6 months!? Now there's a reason for me needing to buy makeup HAHAHA just kidding. This is a fun post, and there are so many myths out there, aren't there and some people still believe them such as going way too light on the face or way too dark on the face.

  3. Very happy to read number 20 - I can't remember the last time I didnt have nail polish on and was only thinking yesterday "I should probably let them breathe for a few days" lol.

  4. I've heard Lisa Eldridge talk about foundation that way (myth 2), how you only need it on the problem areas. I think it's a good tip, lately I've been focusing it on the problem areas but not putting the same amount on the clean areas of my skin. You definitely need a good colour match with your foundation though if you're going to do this haha

  6. I hate that whole "only apply foundation where you need it" thing - I have a really hard to match skintone, so I have to just go with the closest one. If I only applied it on my chin or whatever I'd look so weird!

And I get really angry when people tell others to match foundation to their jawline XD it's in shadow so you're never going to be able to tell if it's a good match. I can't match to my chest either though since I pretty much live in tshirts and therefore have a pale chest, haha.
