The whole shit storm, for you to see. You be the judge.

Here it is... for all to see.

My comments are in bold. I have not changed a thing.

Mine are the bottle green comments.<< Read this first

Rachel Turnbull Firstly, I have not accused anyone on either side of being racist. I don't agree with those who are. I don't think personal attacks have any place in a decent argument.

Secondly, and I have said this previously (not sure if was this page or the previous one), I'm not using my "white privilege" to assume my point of view is more correct than anyone else's. I have said already that I accept that people see racism in the ad. I study anthropology. I've learnt about a lot of cases of racism and discrimination and how that shapes cultural identity. I've also learnt a lot about the right to represent your own or another person's culture.

I certainly don't think that racism is justified, but as you said, where do we draw the line? Should people no longer have the right to celebrate dark-skinned celebrities by dressing up for Halloween or a costume party? Did any of you think the Human Fundamentalism campaign was racist because it drew inspiration from aspects of American Indian and Asian cultures?
  • Annica Hen Interesting point, Rachel...

  • Annica Hen And here's me thinking it's ok to go to fancy dress parties as Beyonce, Diana Ross, The Supremes etc. :( I really am an awful human being :(

Sidenote- I used to do a "Supreme's" act when I was singing... I'm going to hell.

Annica Hen And anyone who has dressed up as Michael Jackson can burn in hell forever and eternity

Taryn Charles All right ladies, I get it. It's hard being white. You have to be careful about whether or not your Halloween costumes are racist. You have to think about whether or not painting your face black could offend people around the world who have been marginalised, enslaved and mistreated for centuries. If anything, I hope this conversation has in some way sown the seeds of doubt in your mind about about privilege, power dynamics and the role of history in current affairs. But I doubt it, white privilege is a hell of a ride.

  • Annica Hen Considering I'm married to a man of color, who gets racially abused by white people daily, I find that comment, Taryn, redundant. When you assume it makes an ass out of you and me. Oh, let's not forget my son will most likely be called a half caste for his entire life... But no, I have no idea, right?

  • Annica Hen And Taryn, Rachel never mentioned anything about painting her, or anyone's face black.

Taryn Charles Annica love, scroll up a bit. The whole discussion is in the context of the painting of faces black. And no, your husband, child, uncle, aunt, best friend, coworker's nephew can be people of colour and it gives you no excuse to leave your white privilege unexaminedes black. That was also your assumption

  • Annica Hen Taryn, you are again assuming that I am, in fact, racist and have "white privlage" without knowing me, or my historical background.

Michaela Williams Annica, if you know how much shit black people put up with, why the fuck are you encouraging racist behaviour? That's disgusting.

HOW AM I ENCOURAGING RACIST BEHAVIOUR, MICHAELA?!

Annica Hen Michaela, that comment is offensive to say the least. I can't even.

Arabella Sparkles Strange-James Annica, if THAT comment is what you find offensive, you really, REALLY need to rethink your values.

Annica Hen Thank you, Arabella. I shall rethink being called "fucking racist" is offensive

Taryn Charles This black girl is done with tonight's education session. Annica, if my white husband ever used me as an excuse to deny his white privilege and the voices of other people of colour, he'd be looking for a new wife. And Rachel, tonight I shed a tear for the Anthropology department at Monash, if your thinking is at all representative of their teaching

Annica Hen Taryn, you further prove you have refused to read what I've written and have made generalized assumptions based on my "white privlage". Good night

bella Sparkles Strange-James Defending racist actions IS more offensive than being called "fucking racist." I wish this were obvious to everyone, but it's clearly not to you. Hence, your need to rethink.

Annica Hen Arabella, I haven't "defended racist actions". I have never said it is ok to victimize people for the color of their skin. I have never said black face is ok. I will never say black face is ok. I wish things were more obvious to others also, but alas, they aren't and most likely won't be.

Michaela Williams Oh Annica, you can have an opinion. You can also be told that your opinion is wrong, hateful, and actively damages a large group of people.

Luckily you can also change your opinion, and I hope one day you will. Promise I won't hold it against you.

By the way, a quick search of this page shows no-one called you a "fucking racist", but nice try!

Annica Hen Forgive me for my sensationalism. I value your opinion, Michaela, I value your right to voice it, I haven't tried to change it, though youve tried to change mine andntold me to not comment. I'm upset that you're offended by the image and believe you should let Illamasqua know. I'm indifferent to you calling me racist as you don't know me ( sticks and stones).

Michaela Williams I didn't call you racist, but noted that supporting or what-ifing about a racist image is indeed actively working against years of hard work to deconstruct stereotypes.
This image has hurt many people who I love dearly, and is being used to make a company money. How is that acceptable?

I'M SUPPORTING RACIST ACTIONS BUT I'M NOT RACIST! OH THE PLAY ON WORDS!

And then old mate Carly starts with the "your husband is Italian, not of colour" jibe...

Haute and Stylish is closing down.

Illamasqua recently released a Christmas campaign image which, unfortunately, evoked a lot of pain and suffering due to people feeling it is racist and derogatory.

I personally felt that this image was not intended to be used as a racial slur, moreover, it was just an ill thought out use of opposing makeup colors on a white model.

I put up with the personal attacks from commenters, calling me racist, that I was basking in my "white privlage", that i have no empathy etc etc etc.

To prove that I do, in fact, have empathy, I used the example of my husband and how he has to deal with racism on an almost daily occurrence. Those who are close to me know my husband's ethnicity, and know the impact racism has had on him while he was growing up. I've heard these stories and, my gosh it makes me ashamed to be an Australian sometimes. Some of the things that he was/gets told...it makes my blood boil.

But what would I know, I'm white, right?

    image

Anyway, one Carly Hammond decides to do a little research and try and find out my husband's ethnicity by going to this blog. She then decided that he was "Italian" (which he isn't) and used it as a personal attack on me to show my ignorance. Her exact words:

"Annica, cluck cluck, your husband is Italian?.. I read your blog "Haute and Stylish" And I did not know Italians were people of color, besides that you've really made a fool of yourself and I'm ashamed to have your blog on my favorites. Delete".

Michaela from "Lather, Rinse, Repeat", then jumps on Carly's bandwagon and cries that she won't be reading my blog either. Such a shame because I thought she would know facts before making assumptions, but whatever. Live and let live.

I'm ok with being called names, I'm ok with being abused (sticks and stones), after all you don't know me and have never met me. I would never call YOU a name, or make an assumption about YOU, yet you think it's ok to do the same to me.

BUT BRINGING IN MY HUSBAND IN SUCH A WAY... YOU SILLY, SILLY GIRL. How dare you?! HOW FUCKING DARE YOU. Are you trying to tell me everything he has experienced and grew up with is nullified because you THINK he is Italian?! You're saying I have no idea about empathy because he isn't even "of color". How the fuck would I know about racism because HE IS ITALIAN?! I can't even. I just can't. Did you make that generalization because of his name? Ffs, and I'm being called the racist one.

This blog was never intended to be used in such a way. The fact that it was shows that I don't want to do this anymore. What was meant to be a compelling debate has turned into a bitchy, "agree with what I say or you're a fucking stupid racist bitch".

    I'm done with this.

    Keep it Haute,

    Anni.

FOTD- Smokey Green Eyes and Pink Lips and Bump Update

I really liked this colour combination I did the other day of green smokey eyes and pink lips! OH! And I didn't wear any eyeliner, which is unheard of for me! YAY!

I also really like how my skin has been looking recently, thanks to using Payot products. Their stuff is amazing!

    Face
Chanel Mat Lumiere foundation no 20
    FOA Translucent Powder
    Clinique Airbrush Concealer
SLA Foundation Stick as concealer on spots

    Cheeks
    Benefit Sugarbomb blush
    Benefit Watts Up! highlighter

    Eyes
A random YSL green shadow I found
    MAC Haute and Naughty mascara

    Lips
Revlon Colourburst Lip Butter in Strawberry Shortcake

    Bump Update!

Right now I'm 7 3/4 months pregnant- my belly has finally popped! Apart from the usual aches and pains, I've had no issues and feel very blessed that my pregnancy has been very easy-going. Here is my bump at 31 weeks:

The nursery is still not done, but oh well! Plenty of time (that's what I keep telling myself!) and it'll all work out!

Revlon Colourburst Lip Butter "Strawberry Shortcake"

So I decided to purchase ANOTHER Revlon Lip Butter to see if this one was any different (better) to the other I got (Sweet Tart)...

This one is "Strawberry Shortcake" and is a heavily blue based, baby pink with no shimmer.

It is marginally opaque on application, and as with "Sweet Tart", will emphasise any dryness on your lips- so exfoliate well beforehand!

As you can see, this colour is incredibly pale, so if you are pale and fair haired , I'd wear this with a very dramatic smokey eye (lest you look like a corpse), OR if you are dark haired, this colour would look just lovely you!

Now let's discuss something that has been bothering me- the packaging. I just do not care for plastic, cheap packaging. Whilst the colour coded tops are very handy, I just can't get past the tackiness. Surely, if I'm spending AU$25 per Lip Butter, they could afford better packaging?! SURELY!?

Anyway, I won't be buying these again. This purchase has just cemented that they are over-priced, over-hyped, under-performing lippies. Give me my Rouge Coco Shines any day!

Let me know your experiences with Lip Butters in the comments!

Circa Nailpolish Haul and 1 Swatch

Whilst waiting for my script to be filled at the local pharmacy, I glimpsed upon a bargain bin screaming "3 FOR $6!" which was choc-a-block full of nail polish.

Being the beauty hoarder that I am, I had to get some:

They don't have names, just numbers :( This rather annoys me as I always forget numbers!

I'm fairly impressed with the range of colours! Neon's are fairly common these days, so I was surprised with the range of pastels available.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find much information about the brand on the Internet, only that it is made in Australia...

I swatched the pale purple colour to see how the formula was. As suspected for a cheap pastel, it was a bit streaky and the colour didn't stay very true to ?pan ?bottle.

You can also see my acrylic damage growing out... usually nail polish covers this.

In conclusion, I'm impressed with the colour range, but not the formula of this particular shade. It could be because it is a pastel, so I'll wait and try the others before I make a final decision.

Hope you all are having a lovely weekend,

I honestly can't WAIT for Spring/Summer! It's so very cold in Brisbane (yes, you DID read that right!) and I'm hanging for long walks along the beach and fruity, strong cocktails!

What's the Deal with "Pushing Presents"

SOMEONE GET THIS LADY A PRESENT!

Another absurd thing I have been introduced with since becoming "with child" is the concept of a "Pushing Present".

Wikipedia describes a "Pushing Present" as:

"A push present (also known as a "push gift" or "baby bauble") is a present a new father gives a new mother when she gives birth to their child. In practice the present may be given before or after the birth, or even in the delivery room. The giving of push presents has supposedly grown in the United States in recent years."

Whilst looking at wedding bands at Michael Hill, the sales assistant enquired as to what my "Pushing Present" would be. I simply replied "my baby", but this woman was adamant I be showered with diamonds and the like and proceeded to show Alberto a catalogue of diamond tennis bracelets I "must" be gifted with as soon as I give birth.

Whilst I'm not necessarily against this concept (hey, if your partner buys you heaps of gifts, good on you!), I just think it's ANOTHER marketing ploy for new parents to BUY BUY BUY! It just doesn't sit well with me, considering I've spent $1000000 setting up everything for baby.

I can just envision at Mother's Group everyone going around in a circle describing in detail what their husbands bought them and how they were presented with their gift:

"Oh, my husband bought me a 1000 carat diamond necklace which was blessed with the water from the remotest part of the Amazon by the Pope and cut using a wild African Albino lion claw. He surprised me by putting it around the baby and when I was presented the baby after birth, he came with this diamond necklace around his chubby neck!"

This brings the question, does a Push Present need to be material? Wouldn't it be better if the new father helps around the house, or even puts money towards the new baby's education? Now THAT's a present!

    Discuss.

    Keep it Haute,

    Anni xox

This is my opinion only. You may like Pushing Presents, you may not. The beauty of this world is having the ability to say which way you sway, so let's be nice :D
