My comments are in bold. I have not changed a thing.
Mine are the bottle green comments.<< Read this first
Rachel Turnbull Firstly, I have not accused anyone on either side of being racist. I don't agree with those who are. I don't think personal attacks have any place in a decent argument.
Secondly, and I have said this previously (not sure if was this page or the previous one), I'm not using my "white privilege" to assume my point of view is more correct than anyone else's. I have said already that I accept that people see racism in the ad. I study anthropology. I've learnt about a lot of cases of racism and discrimination and how that shapes cultural identity. I've also learnt a lot about the right to represent your own or another person's culture.
I certainly don't think that racism is justified, but as you said, where do we draw the line? Should people no longer have the right to celebrate dark-skinned celebrities by dressing up for Halloween or a costume party? Did any of you think the Human Fundamentalism campaign was racist because it drew inspiration from aspects of American Indian and Asian cultures?

Annica Hen Interesting point, Rachel...
Annica Hen And here's me thinking it's ok to go to fancy dress parties as Beyonce, Diana Ross, The Supremes etc.
I really am an awful human being
Sidenote- I used to do a "Supreme's" act when I was singing... I'm going to hell.
Annica Hen Michaela, that comment is offensive to say the least. I can't even.
Arabella Sparkles Strange-James Annica, if THAT comment is what you find offensive, you really, REALLY need to rethink your values.
Annica Hen Thank you, Arabella. I shall rethink being called "fucking racist" is offensive
Taryn Charles This black girl is done with tonight's education session. Annica, if my white husband ever used me as an excuse to deny his white privilege and the voices of other people of colour, he'd be looking for a new wife. And Rachel, tonight I shed a tear for the Anthropology department at Monash, if your thinking is at all representative of their teaching
Annica Hen Taryn, you further prove you have refused to read what I've written and have made generalized assumptions based on my "white privlage". Good night
bella Sparkles Strange-James Defending racist actions IS more offensive than being called "fucking racist." I wish this were obvious to everyone, but it's clearly not to you. Hence, your need to rethink.
Annica Hen Arabella, I haven't "defended racist actions". I have never said it is ok to victimize people for the color of their skin. I have never said black face is ok. I will never say black face is ok. I wish things were more obvious to others also, but alas, they aren't and most likely won't be.
Michaela Williams Oh Annica, you can have an opinion. You can also be told that your opinion is wrong, hateful, and actively damages a large group of people.
Luckily you can also change your opinion, and I hope one day you will. Promise I won't hold it against you.
By the way, a quick search of this page shows no-one called you a "fucking racist", but nice try!
Annica Hen Forgive me for my sensationalism. I value your opinion, Michaela, I value your right to voice it, I haven't tried to change it, though youve tried to change mine andntold me to not comment. I'm upset that you're offended by the image and believe you should let Illamasqua know. I'm indifferent to you calling me racist as you don't know me ( sticks and stones).
Michaela Williams I didn't call you racist, but noted that supporting or what-ifing about a racist image is indeed actively working against years of hard work to deconstruct stereotypes.
This image has hurt many people who I love dearly, and is being used to make a company money. How is that acceptable?
I'M SUPPORTING RACIST ACTIONS BUT I'M NOT RACIST! OH THE PLAY ON WORDS!
And then old mate Carly starts with the "your husband is Italian, not of colour" jibe...
Annica Hen And anyone who has dressed up as Michael Jackson can burn in hell forever and eternity
Taryn Charles All right ladies, I get it. It's hard being white. You have to be careful about whether or not your Halloween costumes are racist. You have to think about whether or not painting your face black could offend people around the world who have been marginalised, enslaved and mistreated for centuries. If anything, I hope this conversation has in some way sown the seeds of doubt in your mind about about privilege, power dynamics and the role of history in current affairs. But I doubt it, white privilege is a hell of a ride.
Annica Hen Considering I'm married to a man of color, who gets racially abused by white people daily, I find that comment, Taryn, redundant. When you assume it makes an ass out of you and me. Oh, let's not forget my son will most likely be called a half caste for his entire life... But no, I have no idea, right?
Annica Hen And Taryn, Rachel never mentioned anything about painting her, or anyone's face black.
Taryn Charles Annica love, scroll up a bit. The whole discussion is in the context of the painting of faces black. And no, your husband, child, uncle, aunt, best friend, coworker's nephew can be people of colour and it gives you no excuse to leave your white privilege unexaminedes black. That was also your assumption
Annica Hen Taryn, you are again assuming that I am, in fact, racist and have "white privlage" without knowing me, or my historical background.
Michaela Williams Annica, if you know how much shit black people put up with, why the fuck are you encouraging racist behaviour? That's disgusting.
HOW AM I ENCOURAGING RACIST BEHAVIOUR, MICHAELA?!
